Media reports that Tomago Aluminium will close in 2028 under the weight of skyrocketing power prices is proof Labor’s energy plan is decimating Australian industry.
According to the Newcastle Herald, Tomago, the nation’s largest aluminium smelter, has rejected a proposed power contract that would have seen the plant operate beyond the end of its current AGL deal.
Hunter based Nationals Senator, Ross Cadell, said the news proved that Labor’s plan will only deliver less jobs and higher energy prices, while driving industry offshore.
“Australian industry is saying it straight. Under Albo and Bowen’s energy plan, they have no future,” Cadell said.
“Without cheap and reliable power, they will pack up and leave.
“Each year Tomago Aluminium spends around $800 million in the Hunter economy, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
“Now, they can’t even afford to keep their own lights on.
“Labor has destroyed Australian industry with an energy plan that relies on fairy dust and green dreams rather than science.
“When Tomago goes, so too does a shock absorber for the New South Wales energy grid that currently keeps the lights on when demand rises.
“Put simply, without Tomago the lights will go out.”
