Upper Hunter confirmed as one of seven sites for nuclear generation

Nationals Senator for New South Wales, Ross Cadell, has welcomed the announcement that New South Wales will host two of seven nuclear power stations under the Coalition’s energy plan, including one in the Upper Hunter.

On Wednesday, Opposition leader Peter Dutton confirmed Liddell, located between Singleton and Muswellbrook, would host a nuclear power station should the Coalition be elected. The other site proposed in New South Wales is Mount Piper, near Lithgow.

“Since coming to office in 2022, I have continually lobbied for the use of nuclear power in Australia’s future energy mix, going as far as saying I would welcome the construction of a power station in the Hunter region,” Senator Cadell said.

The announcement comes after polling, conducted by Senator Cadell, indicated strong support for nuclear energy across the Hunter region. “Earlier this year, I conducted polling in the Hunter electorate, which showed a clear majority of respondents supported the construction of a nuclear power station in the Upper Hunter.

“The Hunter region is well placed to support nuclear power generation given our skilled workforce and longevity of experience in the energy sector.

“I have spoken to many workers in the Hunter Valley who want to maintain their high-paying jobs in the energy sector.

“The construction of a nuclear power station will provide job security and economic prosperity for the region, well beyond the closure of existing coal fired generators.

“I welcome the announcement by Mr Dutton, and look forward to working constructively to ensure the Hunter community is widely consulted as this plan progresses.”
